The executives and networks are beginning to see that there is a real audience for women directed and women focused stories. Bridesmaids was a huge hit and one of my favorite films. Women need to see and hear that there is an opportunity to grow in this business and succeed, while convincing investors to loosen the purse strings.

Urgent Support Needed for Fellow Animator Joey Adams 16 Month Old Twins

Animation director Joseph Adams and his wife Ginger are facing a nightmare with the health of their children. I am passing along their story so that the animation community can come together to show any support possible.

On Christmas day 2011 while Joey and Ginger Adams were visiting family in Pinetop, Az, Ian and Henry, the family's two 16-month old twin boys had to be airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital with advanced pneumonia. Days of anxiety and prayer followed as both babies were given oxygen, and Ian was put into intensive care...

Making this crisis more disturbing, prior to the birth of the twins, Joey and Ginger Adams had already been devastated by the loss of their 16-month old daughter, Gwen, on November 14th 2009 under startlingly similar circumstances.

Today there is a pending diagnosis of HLH for Ian and possibly his twin brother Henry. This would also explain why Gwen had died so suddenly in 2009. Because HLH is a genetic disease, it also means that the Adams's oldest son, Caid (6 years old), could possible have the same disease.

If the diagnosis is correct, the only cure is a successful bone marrow transplant.

Joseph and Ginger Adams have a website they created to keep friends and family updated. They have also set up a PayPal account and a PO Box to give supporters avenues to help with donations and words of encouragement.

HI Pink Slippers!

I hope people are finding more work this year. It seems like the market is picking up slowly. I still hear of artists who have been under employed for 2 to 3 years, or people who have left the business altogether, but there seem to be fewer as the year progresses.

Because of PINK SLIP's consistent support among animation professionals worldwide, our network is a useful source for animators whether employed or under employed. I continue to connect individuals with artists that can help on projects and many people have found work through our connections.

We all need to work and it is up to us to make sure we provide work and help our community, therefore helping ourselves.

PINK SLIP is a hub for artists to check in, post work updates, and keep up to date on progress in our daily lives.

Please use PINK SLIP for your professional needs. The Kustomonsters is a high octane zany comedy take blending the 60’s “Kustom Car Kulture” of Ed Daddy Roth with the classic lovable spookiness of Hollywood horror monsters and vintage cartoons. Meet “Mummy DaddyO”, the friendly “horror host” lead hipster of this motley bunch from Horror Heights. His sidekick, “Butterball the Skeleton”, joins animated puppet DaddyO as he hosts the show from the Ends Ville Coffeehouse.

On each episode DaddyO and Butterball present a Kustomonsters cartoon along with other award winning animated shorts and cool music videos. The Kustomonsters cartoons feature DaddyO driving in his hot rod The Sarcofogaaas, while guzzling nitro java at "Rodzillas" the creepy carhop. Court Rejects Google Book Settlement

Yesterday, U.S. Circuit Judge Denny Chin rejected the Book Rights Registry settlement between Google and the US Authors Guild. The $125 million commercial agreement would have rewarded both parties for the largest mass infringement of authors' copyrights in history. Instead, the judge ruled it a business deal "too far."

"A Reversal of Copyright Law" is what we called this agreement in our warning to illustrators September 29, 2009. Like the visual arts "databases" we opposed during the Orphan Works fight, we wrote:

"this agreement would allow both Google and a yet-to-be-created Book Rights Registry to commercially profit from an author's work whenever they say they can't locate the author.

"Both schemes would force authors to opt out of commercial operations that infringe their work or to 'protect' their work by opting-in to privately owned databases run by infringers. This Hobson's Choice for authors reverses the principle of copyright law."

Judge Chin held this to be the case. "A copyright owner's right to exclude others from using his property is fundamental and beyond dispute," he ruled. "[I]t is incongruous with the purpose of the copyright laws to place the onus on copyright owners to come forward to protect their rights when Google copied their works without first seeking their permission."

The judge also noted objections to the "Adequacy of Class Representation." In short, this holds that neither Google, nor any organizations claiming to represent authors, nor the university libraries that gave Google "permission" to digitize their holdings, own the copyrights to the works this agreement would have allowed them to exploit.

Therefore, they have no standing to broker deals based on claims that they represent the "class" of authors.

The judge held this to be the case even where organizations asserted the right to "expropriate" "orphaned" royalties belonging to rightsholders. Noting that "After ten years,unclaimed funds may be distributed to literary-based charities," the judge concluded:

"[A]t a minimum a fair question exists as to whether this Court or the Registry or the Fiduciary would be expropriating copyright interests belonging to authors who have not voluntarily transferred them. As Professor Nimmer has written: 'By its terms Section 201(e) is not limited to acts by governmental bodies and officials. It includes acts of seizure, etc., by any 'organization' as well.' 3 Melville B. Nimmer & David Nimmer, Nimmer on Copyright §10.04 (Rev. Ed. 2010) (footnote omitted)." [Page 31 of the judge's ruling, emphasis added.]

In rejecting the settlement, Judge Chin also echoed the US Justice Department's antitrust objections: The deal, he wrote, "would give Google a significant advantage over competitors, rewarding it for engaging in wholesale copying of copyrighted works without permission..." He suggested the settlement might win approval if it were revised to cover only those who opt into the agreement.

By now everyone has heard about the terrible tragedy in Japan. Casualties are now in the 10,000's. There are reports of people without blankets in below 0 temperatures and small things like diapers for babies are nowhere to be found. The news has been quick to say that Japan is better prepared for such disasters but that DOES NOT mean they do not need help.Please don't forget about the people in need. And as a friend pointed out...the japanese donated millions to help Katrina victims.One japanese man even donated a million of his own money.
We've decided to organize and host an online sale and auction. All proceeds will go to the Japan Red Cross and select hospitals in areas affected by the tsunamis.

Hi All PINK SLIP Animation supporters!

We are in the production stage of a new project!
(There is a reason it has been quiet for a few months....)

Art Phibes from MuSick Recordings has graciously agreed to allow PINK SLIP Animation to use his project to teach our FLASH classes.
This is exactly the type of trade PINK SLIP Animation wants to promote within our group, and Art came to us with the perfect first project for us.

THE WAY IT WORKS:

We have an experienced FLASH teacher who will be teaching experienced traditional 2D animators the FLASH basics, all while completing a project in production. It is a hands on learning experience with a portfolio piece when completed.
Art's project will be on the web once we complete the project. No one is paid on either end. It is learning a skill while using that skill.

PINK SLIP Animation, and Sue Bielenberg, are dedicated to getting animation professionals back in the work force. One of the ways we are trying to help is by training 2D animators in new skills so they can do more jobs. Or even animate their own project using the new technology. This is not free work. It is a trade.

Sue Bielenberg and Kwesi Kennedy are the directors on the project.

Sue's call out to animators is below:

We are ready to begin our Flash Training and Production Program, and we just need a few more students to fill out the first wave of trainees, who we hope will become the core production group for future Pink Slip projects. What we ideally are looking for are:

Experienced, trained artists with professional experience as artists in the animation industry

People between jobs or working at home currently who can commit to MWF sessions for 3 weeks (Sessions are 3 hrs each and will be during the day)

Individuals who OWN or can BORROW a laptop for the project

Local LA residents

Those willing to train on our current project, IOW, exchange labor for training.

Continue our cooperative to help one another in this business. No haters.
Sign NDA per project.
More potlucks, lectures, and workshops to members of PS.
Invest finances in basic needs of the coop. Do not invest in anything that is not or will not pay off.
OK to disagree and debate, but we need to get serious.
Any professional in entertainment, whether working or not, can join the group at $50 a year. We will make available payment plans for those who need it.
No more stealing from the pot. Coming into PINK SLIP, using the network and resources, then leaving to take project somewhere else, undermines what we are trying to do. Instead, bring resources into the group to strengthen the group.
Work hard to change the pay scale and image of artists in entertainment.
Become savvy business people. We will have business classes for creatives.

It has been quiet for a couple of months, but we have been very, very busy....

Art of Rock

Sue Bielenberg, Kwesi Kennedy, and Igor Schneyderman have been steadily working on our first professional PINK SLIP production for Art Bourasseau, owner of Musick Recordings: http://www.musickrecordings.com/

Sue and Kwesi are directing a one minute intro for his new interview show called Art of Rock.

Art agreed to allow us to use his project for Flash training in exchange for animation on his project, with Kwesi as our Flash instructor.

We have an extremely talented crew so far: Sue Bielenberg, Kwesi Kennedy, Igor Schneyderman, Carol Wyatt, Andy Bialk, and some very talented animators taking the Flash class.

Over the holidays (even Christmas Day), Sue, Kwesi, and Igor were working on finalizing changes on the animatic, rough BG keys and layouts, and changes on designs. They have worked incredibly hard and all for the goal of getting our classes off the ground.

Igor has set up the project on animationmaui to organize the production.

Animationmaui and PINK SLIP are working together to get our positive and ethical businesses off the ground.

Igor Schneyderman has proven to be a valuable production coordinator and works closely with Kwesi and Sue. He is extremely organized and always reliable. Plus he pin points conflicts and suggests solutions.

Sue Bielenberg has taken over directing and has done a fantastic job diving into the project. She has done a few versions of the animatic with changes in timing and adding/subtracting scenes depending on Art's needs.

Kwesi Kennedy is the technical director and instructor. He, along with Sue, has done much more... Including BG design & establishing the assets for the animation process.

Andy Bialk has been working on the character designs and turnarounds as needed.

Carol Wyatt has just re-joined the team and will be helping with anything and everything that needs to be done, including BGs and a logo. Carol is also hosting the lessons at her home in Glendale.

This has been a learning experience for all of us and we are fortunate enough to have a client who is patient and kind. He is very supportive of our group and what we are trying to do. This experience will help us for future projects. We are learning the pitfalls as we go.

TOY STORY 3 WINS Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature

CONGRATULATIONS to PIXAR and all of the people who made this wonderful film!

So, where's the press?

If it weren't for Cartoon Brew, the PIXAR Times and DISNEYWIRE, I might not have found out about Toy Story 3's win at all.
NY Times? Chicago Tribune? LA Times had a strange article about how the Toy Story 3 franchise is older than the children who went to see it. Even Variety is missing a statement.
Yes, the winners are listed. Best Animated Feature is way down the list right above Best Foreign Language Film.

But this is the Golden Globes!
I see article upon article in every major newspaper about who wore what designers creations. Who looked great, who didn't. Articles about The Social Network, The King's Speech, and The Kid's Are Alright.
Why is every film mentioned EXCEPT Toy Story 3? And nowhere can you read anything about the other animated films that were nominated: Despicable Me, How To Train Your Dragon,The Illusionist, and Tangled... All amazing films.

The irony of this is either hilarious or very sad.
More people of all ages have seen and loved the beautifully written, directed, and animated films nominated than their live action counterparts. The Voice Over actors were amazing (they are not nominated in the mainstream awards). You could see the enthusiasm on Tom Hanks and Tim Allen's faces during the award presentation. They looked like they wanted to jump out of their seats. They did have a presentation on stage and Tim Allen did his famous Buzz Lightyear voice.

Is it because the market is over saturated with animated characters and toys? What would it be like to get a Black Swan or miniature Burlesque doll with your happy meal?

Is it because animation is only for children? Every adult I know has seen every recent animated film at least once, or 5 times.

Is it because the scripts do not tackle controversial issues? Could animation directors do abortion, gay marriage, or an entire film of a man cutting off his hand?

Maybe animation studios should pay Furries to walk along side Lee Unkrich on the red carpet. Maybe then there will be photos of Lee Unkrich.

Maybe animated films try too hard... They try to please too many people too much of the time.
But the animated films who do take a stand, or are intense, never see a wide release. They are reserved for Art movie houses.

So what will it take for Ricky Gervais to make snide comments about animation directors and actors? At least he supports animation with his own show on HBO.

Most animators hate the awards shows. Or, at least they say they hate them. But awards or no awards, publicity is money in the bank. And money in the bank means more work for out of work writers, directors, actors, animators, editors, sound mixers, and post production houses.
Whether animators truly hate the awards or not, they need to step it up a notch.
We need the work. And we need to be paid what we're worth in the market.

Animated Films Are Conquering the Box Office!

Walt Disney's TANGLED
Live action directors, actors, writers, and all other professionals, are paid mega bucks compared to animators. But... Animation is raking in the $$$ !!!!
When will animators stop whining about all of the unfair practices and ask for what they deserve??

I recently re-posted the list of top grossing films of 2010 on our Facebook page, originally printed in Cinematical Dec. 27th.

Of those films:
4 out of 10 are Animated films.
3 out of the 6 live action films rely on animation for almost everything.
The remaining 2 out of 3 live action films utilize animated effects on a grand scale.
Only ONE live action film is entirely live action!!

Disney's Thanksgiving film Tangled has transformed into the gift that won't stop giving, jumping the $150 million mark this week at the domestic box office and keeping up with newer Christmas family offerings.

Disney's Tron: Legacy registered its own milestone Tuesday as it became the first Christmas film to cross the $100 million mark domestically. Overseas, the pic has brought in roughly $75 million for a worldwide total of $175 million.Tangled grossed $3.6 million on Tuesday from 2,582 theaters for a cume of $150.6 million in its fifth week.

Tron is a solid performer, but it hasn't broken out to the extent Disney might have liked beyond its core fanboy base.

Conversely, Tangled has done far more business than anyone predicted. Most had expected the film to gross $125 million domestically. Now, the movie is expected to reach $175 million.

It's probably no coincidence that Tangled is the only film of the year to receive a glowing A+ from CinemaScore. With that kind of grade, Tangled is being fueled by great word-of-mouth.

On Tuesday, Tangled came in No. 6 for the day to beat Fox's disappointing Christmas entryGulliver's Travels, which grossed $2.9 million from 2,546 theaters for a four-day cume of $11.9 million. Gulliver's placed No. 7.

Tangled came in just behind Fox's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which grossed $3.7 million for a cume of $69.8 million.

Warner Bros.' Christmas kids pic Yogi Bear placed No. 4, grossing $4.4 million for a cume of $49 million.

Universal's Little Fockers, which brought in $7.8 million for a cume of $61.3 million, continued to top the domestic box-office chart.

Paramount's True Grit swapped places with Tron to come in No. 3 Tuesday, grossing $6.1 million for a cume of $49.3 million.

The past 12 months on the foreign theatrical circuit will go down in the record books as the year of Avatar and of the emergence of 3D as a force of undeniable box-office power.
According to studio preliminary estimates, offshore box office for the six Hollywood majors from all territories outside the U.S. and Canada will total $12.7 billion, a leap of almost 20% from 2009's former record of $10.7 billion.
So why are animators afraid to ask for what they deserve?
Notoriously hard working, quality obsessed individuals who will work all hours to do great work are easily taken advantage of by producers and studios. They ask for more work for less money and not enough time to do the work. This will never change. No studio or producer is going to hand an animator a raise. No boss ever does ... in any business.
When will animators stick together in confidence knowing that when they do, they will be treated with respect and paid what they are worth?

PINK SLIP ANIMATION Update, August 7, 2010

Hi PINK Slippers!

After our last meeting and a few recent phone conversations, I have started to hone in on our immediate needs.

We need to get our long awaited channel up and running.
Originally we set out to have a 24/7 channel with animated films, series, recordings, and cartoonists' art that will connect to a separate cartoonists only site.

Over the last 6 months or so, we have had growth and changes within the group.
We tried to start an LLC only to realize that we are behind in the business plan and cannot move forward as a business until we are truly ready.
We also tried to start our FLASH classes using a wonderful project in development, only to realize that the creators of projects do not have enough control over their project once released as a teaching aid.

We had many passionate debates in meetings and have slowed PINK SLIP down to the caring, eclectic group we started in the first place. A group of animators and artists helping one another to complete and work on personal projects.

Sue Bielenberg has continually been dedicated to starting up FLASH classes for our group. Her mission is to make sure PINK SLIPPERS are trained and ready for any project that may come our way.
Currently we have a few FLASH animators in the group who have years of experience and their own production companies. Those artists have offered to handle production on projects while hiring PINK SLIPPers who are out of work. A wonderful gesture on their part!

The project we have had the most enthusiasm to work on as a group using FLASH training, is a PINK SLIP reel. We are hoping to reflect most SLIPPers talents and edit a nice reel together to play on our website. I have received a few offers from experienced jazz and feature musicians to add music to our site and/or reel as a trade.

At our next group meeting we can discuss the channel and future technology. I believe that we need to be a part of cutting edge technology so we will not lose our foothold as an important part of media. Millions of people love animation and do not want it to die. However, we need to merge our talents with future media and find ways to work within those parameters and make the medium ours.
Any experts in media and technology are welcome to attend meetings and share your knowledge.... Or give a lecture.

We are writing up a set of rules and guidelines for PINK SLIP Membership.
Membership will be $50 annually and entitle the member to various benefits of being in the group.
All membership fees will go towards basic day to day running of the group.... Printing, business cards, promotional fees, convention fees, website, etc... Up until now, I, along with a few generous members have paid all costs associated with running the group.

We will vote on a Quality Control board to monitor and vote on content. As PINK SLIP is a professional group, we want to maintain a level of quality standards. Not everyone will like everything, but we will establish a list to go by when selecting films, cartoons, etc...

Business Manager - We need someone/s who has experience in this business, has good connections, wants to make a change in this industry, and can bring in funding for projects. It is vital that this person has succeeded in their field and knows the ins and outs of putting a project together, then distributing that project. An ideal candidate would be someone who is ready to support and grow an upstart, innovative group such as PINK SLIP Animation. We need only the best person for this job. PINK SLIP wants to succeed and build a fair and equitable company with high standards in quality & fairness. A green vision as well. We want to put our community back to work!

Marketing - We need someone who can write excellent press releases and make connections within the industry.

As far as our original goal:
To come together to help one another and make work for ourselves....
This goal has been and is continually achieved.

We have had many people connect with new employment, work on projects they may never had had a chance to do, and provide service to fellow animators worldwide.
I am so proud and excited by the energy and enthusiasm our group has.
Although we cannot change the economy single-handedly, we are continuing to do our part to try and create more work opportunities, more connections, and a network of positive creativity rather than the bitter kind. We are much stronger in numbers and can support one another during this terrible economy.

Our next meeting will be in September.

Liza Donnelly is the author of Funny Ladies: The New Yorker’s Greatest Women Cartoonists and Their Cartoons. A contract cartoonist, she is also the editor of the anthology Sex and Sensibility: Ten Women Examine the Lunacy of Modern Love. Along with her husband, Michael Maslin, she wrote Cartoon Marriage: Adventures in Love and Matrimony with The New Yorker’s Cartooning Couple, and her newest book is When Do They Serve The Wine?: The Folly, Fun and Flexibility of Being a Woman (Chronicle Books, 2011). Donnelly is a founding member of Cartooning for Peace and teaches at Vassar College.

At the film's opening in 1998, he said of the character: “Unconsciously, I would scowl all day while I was drawing him. Priscillano "Pres" Romanillos, the animator who brought to life the athletic Native American Little Creek in DreamWorks' "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" and the evil Shan-Yu in Disney's "Mulan," has died. He was 47.

Romanillos died at his home in Tujunga on Saturday, surrounded by his family, friends and pets. The cause of death was complications from leukemia.

During his 21-year career, Romanillos earned the respect of his fellow artists for his exceptional drawing ability and his enthusiasm for the art of animation.

"I first met Pres during production on 'The Little Mermaid,' when he was an animation trainee, straight out of art school," said Disney supervising animator Ruben Aquino. "From the very beginning, I was impressed by his beautiful draftsmanship, but even more by his incredible passion for animation."

Born in Zamboanga in the Philippines on Jan. 11, 1963, Romanillos came to the United States with his family in 1971 and grew up in the Queens borough of New York City. When he was 9, his older brother Bob started a correspondence course in art but lost interest in it. Romanillos began doing the assignments and later attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.

After graduating, he came to Walt Disney Studios in 1989 as an animation trainee on "The Little Mermaid." He served as an assistant animator on "The Rescuers Down Under," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin," and was promoted to animator on the 1995 film " Pocahontas," working on the title character.

"Pres was a man who loved to draw," said Glen Keane, who served as a mentor to Romanillos.

"When he came to the edge of his paper, his pencil didn't stop; he continued to draw characters onto the wood of his animation desk." That desk now sits in the Disney Animation Research Library.

"When the time came to do 'Pocahontas,' Pres was up for promotion," said Eric Goldberg, who directed the film with Mike Gabriel. "His first test scene was of Pocahontas' dainty foot dipping into the water at the start of the song 'Just Around the Riverbend.' It was so beautiful, Mike and I glanced at each other briefly and said, 'Yep, you're an animator.'"

At Disney's Florida studio, Romanillos created his most memorable character, Shan-Yu, the brutal leader of the Hun army. Richard Corliss wrote in Time magazine: "The villain, a crazed, WWF-style hulkster named Shan-Yu, has no comic irony softening his brute trapezoidal lines. He's just an evil machine with vampire teeth. The Wall, the vast plains and hills, the Forbidden City itself, all cringe at his shadow."

"Mulan" co-director Barry Cook said Romanillos "was such a gentle soul, it was amazing to see that villain come out of him as an animator and a performer. Shan-Yu had no comedic elements. He was a straight villain who needed to feel like a real threat to our heroine. Pres pulled that off in an amazing way."

In an interview at the film's opening in 1998, Romanillos described the character.

"The challenge in animating him was to convey his weight and gravity: He's like a force of impending doom," he said. "Unconsciously, I would scowl all day while I was drawing him. When I worked on Pocahontas, I would go home feeling sexy; with Shan-Yu, my wife was always asking, 'Why are you so angry?'"

After "Mulan," Romanillos moved to DreamWorks, where he animated various characters for "The Road to El Dorado" (2000), "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas" (2003), "Shrek 2" (2004) and "Madagascar" (2005). One of his most memorable characters was in 2002's "Spirit": Little Creek, the clever, mischievous Lakota Indian who befriends Spirit.

In 2006, Romanillos began drawing "Life as a Pickle," a blog about the cats, dogs, rabbits and other pets he and his wife rescued from animal shelters. The main character was Pickle, a cartoon based on their chubby, aging rat terrier. Romanillos used his canine alter-ego to offer a slightly befuddled dog's-eye view of the world.

Romanillos and fellow animation artist Scott Johnston went to Salamanca, Spain, in 2007 to help establish the Enne animation studio and train artists. Romanillos directed "The Old Chair," a short film featuring drawn and computer-generated versions of Pickle and other characters from the blog.

During production, he was diagnosed with leukemia and returned to the United States. Following a bone marrow transplant, he did his final animation work, for Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" and for DreamWorks' "Shrek Forever After."

"Pres was one of the most respected and beloved artists at our studio," said DreamWorks Animation chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg. "All of us in the animation community deeply mourn the loss of Pres ... though his memory and legacy will forever exist in the characters he brought to life through his art."

Romanillos is survived by Jeanine, his wife of 14 years. Plans for a life celebration are pending.

Disney's official fan club, D23, is teaming up with ArcLight Cinemas to present classic Disney movies every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday throughout the month of August.

ArcLight Hollywood will showcase Disney's science-fiction and fantasy films, ArcLight Sherman Oaks will feature Disney's animated classics, and fans will be able to sing along to Disney musicals at ArcLight Pasadena.

The series begins on Monday, August 2 at ArcLight Hollywood with 1983's "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and ends with 1953's "Peter Pan" at ArcLight Sherman Oaks on Tuesday, August 31.

Wow! Bob Camp is coming to Observatory this Friday, July 9th. You know him as co-creator of the Ren and Stimpy show, the template for modern screwball cartoons, but you might not know all the other hat’s Bob wears. Bob is a cartoonist/illustrator, comic book artist, writer, story artist, designer, director and producer. He has worked on many TV series as well as feature films for such studios as Warner Brothers, Fox and Nickelodeon. Bob has been nominated for two Emmys, a Cable Ace award, and an Annie for his work on the “Ren and Stimpy” animated series. He was an illustrator at Marvel Comics on many comic titles including GI Joe, Crazy Magazine, Marvel Age, Bizarre Adventures, Savage Tales, Conan the Barbarian and The Nam. He has done covers, comics and editorial illustrations for Family Weekly magazine and The National Lampoon. Bob is presently developing concepts for film, TV and the internet.

Currently looking to fill positions for storyboard artists and storyboard revisionists.

This is a primetime, 2D animated show and a full time in house position.
We are looking for seasoned artists, preferably with primetime experience.
We look for key skills of perspective, solid-form drawing, shot selection, and intuitive character acting.
Ability to take direction and communicate with production, and directors is a must.
Looking for people with strong communication, organizational skills, thumbnailing, and tight boarding skills.
This show is revision-heavy (an understatement), so we need people who will happily change things as much as needed. This show has a particular style, so we need people who can adapt and stick to a style outside of their own.
This show has a rigid schedule, therefore time management is a must. We are entirely digital, using cintiqs and Storyboard Pro. Knowledge of this program is a plus.
We provide a short learning curve, so we are looking for people with digital experience.

One year ago, June 11, 2009, while unemployed for a time, I shouted out, “Anyone who wants to band together our resources and make our own projects, contact me…”

Craig Clark contacted me right away. As did Sue Bielenberg, Mike Milo, Jon Kinyon, Larry Levine, Tim Saguinsin, and many, many others. From as far away as Tasmania, to Canada, Spain, and NY.

The interest and enthusiasm was contagious. I jokingly called us pink slip animation one day, and the name stuck. With a horrible economy and many animators layed off due to outsourcing, we were all looking for a way to work and create new ways to make a living.

The group formed quickly with many seasoned veterans from animation…. People I have looked up to for years. This was becoming something more than just a club with connections. As word of mouth spread, industry professionals from editing, voice over, writing, producing, directing, cartooning, flash animation and CG animation,... every job was covered.

If we had funding, we could have staffed a TV show or feature.

Immediately, people in the group formed small crews of their own to help each other on their own personal projects. We listened to a few pitches and voted on two projects to produce within our own group. We shared connections with each other and helped critique each other’s work.

One year later, we have come to a crossroads. Do we move forward and create a money making business? This will surely change the fabric of our group, creating competition among artists and dissent. It will also create work for us.

Or do we keep PINK SLIP the same and organize the group requiring membership, dues, and donations to keep the group’s expenses paid for?

The friendships and associates I have met over the last year are mind boggling. I think this group has something special and provides a place for employed and unemployed artists to bond, work together on personal projects, help each other with pitches, and create a huge connection base. Being unemployed is such a depressing time and PINK SLIP has provided a place to get out of that rut and be creative by being of service to a fellow artist.

Thank you to ALL of you who have been so supportive in the last year. It has been an amazing experience, with more years on the horizon.

This retrospective will feature a selection of Paley’s syndicated comic strips, illustrations, and a series of prints, paintings and behind-the-scenes materials from Sita.

About Nina Paley:

Nina Paley is a longtime veteran of syndicated comic strips, creating Fluff (Universal Press Syndicate), The Hots (King Features), and her own alternative weekly Nina’s Adventures. In 1998, she began making independent animated festival films, including the controversial yet popular environmental short, The Stork. In 2002, Paley followed her then-husband to Trivandrum, India, where she read her first Ramayana. This inspired her first feature, Sita Sings the Blues, which she animated and produced single-handedly over the course of five years on a home computer.

Sita Sings the Blues has screened in over 150 film festivals and won over 35 international awards including the Annecy Grand Crystal, The IFFLA Grand Jury Prize, and a Gotham Award. Paley’s adventures in our broken copyright system led her to copyLeft her film, and join QuestionCopyright.org as Artist-in-Residence. She is now re-releasing all her old comics under a Creative Commons Share-Alike license.

A 2006 Guggenheim Fellow, Paley is currently producing a series of animated shorts about intellectual freedom called Minute Memes.

Bev Chapman brought her preschool display and the Pink Slip fortune cookies on
Saturday. Her show is ready to be made! Of course, flash classes
begin next Sunday at Juli's house and they will be using Bev's show to animate on.
Beautiful work Bev! And thank you for staying all day Saturday!

Andy Wolf showed up Saturday to happily autograph photos and talk up his
DVDs and our group. Unfortunately, it was a ghost town. Thanks for
your help Andy. Always enthusiastic!

Scott Shaw! had his own table a row behind ours. It was fun to peek over and
wave through the imaginary crowds. He brought us a stack of comics to
entertain us. He also introduced me to a few of his friends, all great
people in the comics industry. Thank you Scott!

Bronnie Barry came Friday to help set up and work. Luckily, Friday there
were a few people who stopped by and were interested in our group.
Because Bronnie knows so many people in this business, she brought
friends over and spread the Pink Slip message. Especially the Pres Aid
fundraiser going on live right now on eBay.
Thank you Bronnie!
She attracted a few well known figures to our booth and I was glad
to finally meet them in person. Especially Jerry Beck, who I had a
great time talking to.

Sue Bielenberg came Friday and helped keep the humor going while the tumbleweeds rolled by. She was able to speak with a few people about Oh Tabby and talk up the group. Thank you Sue!

Jamie Kezlarian Bolio we owe a huge thank you to. As always, Jamie showed up early, helped with set up, tear down, promoting our group and artists with
projects in production. Because Jamie also knows everyone in the
business, she brought friends by and created relationships with
people. She was able to get the word out about Pres Romanillos' upcoming art-auction. A few people picked up flyers and said they would donate blood. Thank you so much Jamie!!

Thank you Craig Clark (and his cute daughter Lola) and Russell Calabrese for coming by Saturday. It was great to see so much involvement and support from
our members.

I must thank my two daughters, Daisy and Casey for tagging along and
being enthusiastic despite sharing me with Pink Slip. And my husband
Steve Carey, for supporting me every day no matter what crazy ideas I come
up with.

Even though this event did not attract the crowds, we did our job and were well prepared. There are a lot of things I want to do for the next convention. We can start planning and discussing at our next meeting, June 13th, 2-4pm, at The Animation Guild in Burbank, CA.

We have a strong foundation and in time will make all of our goals
happen. I am sure of it.
